This was my final project for an Information Design class I took in the spring of 2012. It was an open assignment, and I chose to create an HTML5 widget that visualized the samples in a 12 minute segment of Girl Talk's popular new album, All Day. In the whole 72 minute mashup, he samples just over 300 songs, creating an incredible new musical experience out of the last 40 years of music.
The project serves as a visual aid to experience while listening to the track. It has a kind of 'fishbowl' effect. Each sample is represented by a colored arc, the completeness of which shows the progress through the sample, and whose color shows the age (release year) of the sample. The title of the sampled song and the artist are both listed at the center of the arc. If you mouse over a sample, you can see the release year, providing a look at the timespan of the current mix.
Once a sample is finished, it ripples out for a minute or so, meaning that at any point you can get a quick visual reference of what happened over the last minute of the mix.
Link below! I recently changed the color scheme so it would look better projected on a wall - the project was on display at Hack 2.0, a Philly Tech Week art show.
